Village Square

A poem for rasetsunyo, now with added Canadian content™.

I had a penny,
A bright new penny,
I took my penny
To the Village square.
I wanted a dragon,
A little red dragon,
And I looked for a dragon
'Most everywhere.

So I went to the store that sold organic vej'tables
("Only seven dollars for three heritage tomatoes!").
"Have you got a dragon, 'cos I don't like vej'tables?"
But they hadn't got a dragon, not anywhere there.

I had a quarter,
A round and silver quarter,
I took my quarter
To the Village square.
I did want a dragon,
A little baby dragon,
And I looked for dragons
'Most everywhere.

I went to the store that sold fair trade coffee beans
("Only twenty dollars for a pound of green Peruvian!").
"Have you got a dragon, 'cos I don't want coffee beans?"
But they hadn't got a dragon, not anywhere there.

I found a loonie,
A shiny gold loonie.
I took it in my hand
To the Village square.
I was buying my dragon
(I do like dragons),
And I looked for my dragon
'Most everywhere.

So I went to the store where they sold fine saucepans
("Two hundred dollars for Le Creuset ware!").
"Could I have a dragon, 'cos cast iron's heavy?"
But they hadn't got a dragon, not anywhere there.

I had nuffin',
No, I hadn't got nuffin',
So I didn't go down
To the Village square;
But I walked in Chinatown,
Tacky old Chinatown...
And I saw little dragons
'Most everywhere!

So I'm sorry for the people who sell fine saucepans,
I'm sorry for the people who sell green coffee beans,
I'm sorry for the people who sell organic vej'tables,
'Cos they haven't got a dragon, not anywhere there!
