11:55 pm - Busy weekend!
(1) Intended to go see Accuracy of Death at the Japan Society, but it was sold out so I went to see the Slants with [info]littlebutfierce and [info]phredd. The two acts that went on before them were not especially good, but the Slants rocked the place out. Their music is a bit reminiscent of some of the recent classic-rock-throwback bands like the Killers, with lots of loud crunchy guitars, but also cool synth beats. I overcame my inhibitions enough to actually dance, and it was very dancey music. And I geeked out when the keyboardist played "Sakura sakura." Also I ordered a weak rum & coke, but it wasn't so weak - I could barely taste the coke. I continue to be dismayed by my low tolerance for alcohol but I don't intend to stop drinking completely, so I can either continue to drink occasionally and have bad reactions or try to drink more often and build up some tolerance...

(2) Broke down and bought the digital piano that I wanted, because I got my stimulus check and it was on sale. I really don't like Guitar Center - I'm going to avoid them in the future, not least because they always make me check my bag. No one ever is available to help me, and even though I barely talked to the salesman he lied to me ("It isn't heavy." Whatever. I got it home to Brooklyn somehow, but my arms are not happy today.)

(3) Hung out at Meaghan's place playing Rock Band, where I learned that Jesse Helms had died.
Let me make this clear: I don't think it's good for me to hate people, or take pleasure in their deaths. The whole "do not ask for whom the bell tolls" thing, I get it.
But I will make an exception for this guy.
I lived in NC from the time I was 12 to the time I was 18. Jesse Helms was one of our senators for that entire period of time. I watched the 1996 race with great interest and just about cried when he beat Harvey Gantt. There was actually a book published of ignorant, bigoted, racist things that Helms had said - he had said enough terrible things to fill a book.
I can only think he lived this long because God didn't want to deal with him.

(4) Went to see Wall-E with Meaghan and Marshall. Liked it a great deal, though with mixed feelings especially about the treatment of gender. I'm increasingly disappointed with Pixar for making these movies that are meticulous and carefully thought-out in every respect... except that they thought it was totally unproblematic to reduce the female-gendered robot to a baby-plant-incubator. I actually thought at one point, "Is this movie just Children of Men remade with adorable robots?"

(5) Went to see Yasukuni today. The reviews all said that it was long and boring, and the reviews were right, and yet I liked the movie and am glad that I saw it. It was a movie that was trying to do things other than being entertaining. I wonder if the filmmaker was actually trying to actively take an anti-entertaining approach - as if any attempt to impose a stronger narrative arc on the movie would have threatened the movie's own fragmentary internal logic.  I mean, it's certainly not the case that the filmmaker didn't know what he was doing, so I have to assume there was something purposeful about the boredom.nd

What am I saying? It's ALWAYS time for me to be feeling anxious and insecure about my writing!

05:21 pm - Clarion West laptop theft — please help!

I’ve never been to any of the Clarions — too poor to quit my job, and never got more than 4 weeks’ vacation — but I can’t imagine what it would be like to get in and then have this happen. Please help by donating: here if you have money, and here if you actually have a spare machine.

01:48 pm - Ow ow ow
I bought a new pair of walking shoes the other day. Ecco goretex, quite expensive. I'm sure they will be wonderful in a week or two, but right now there is agony. I knew there would be chafing, there always is with new shoes, especially Eccos. However, I think I've managed a new personal best (or worst) this time. Each of my achilles heels/tendons now sports a 50p-sized raw, skinless, watering patch of pain. And I even brought bandaids with me walking to work yesterday, they just weren't good enough. I'm going to attempt to get to the supermarket to get some serious, heavy-duty special band aids. Wish me luck...

ETA: No, I don't have flipflops. I am seeing the error of my ways now, and it shall have to be rectified. Pain is, however, a magnificent motivation to be hardcore practical. After 50 yards of limping, I thought 'sod this!' and stomped the heelcap of my shoe down to make it a temporary slipper. And voila! I could walk, not limp, the rest of the way there and back again without discomfort. My poor shoe. :)

In happier news, a friend and I watched a couple of Tenimyus and killed a bottle of wine last night. Very enjoyable, and it's nice to have it confirmed that the St. Rudolph musical is indeed a nice one, while the Yamabuki one is a boring mess with a couple of fun songs. The overabundance of flashbacks was extremely vexing having seen Rudimyu only minutes before... Next myu up is Hyoutei in Winter. Mmmmm! *_*

Today: Ladies' final at Wimbledon. Williams sisters go go go!!!

11:45 pm - I live! Brief Pride and LLnM update
Oops, meant to update sooner. Again. Still sleep deprived (have been since the middle of *last* week), having a pain flare due to overdoing it at Pride (so worth it), but I survived! I was even fabulous!

See? (worksafeness warning: topless with pot leaves) )

More pics in Tav's Flickr sets for Toronto Pride 2008 and Cannabis Day 2008 (alas we had to leave before the rally got started), and the Toronto Compassion Centre Flickr group.

Also, [info]livelongnmarry continues to be made of awesome and win. Amazing new offers are constantly being added.

One of my custom animal ear hats went for a Buy-It-Now price of $75!

The other custom animal ear hats is still available for bidding, here.

AND! Just today I posted a brand new unique offer of awesomeness which does not have any bids yet!

03:27 pm - Hey, June's over!
Things that make me laugh out loud... seeing an author post on SPN_storyfinders looking for some fics to read and then she got her own stories rec'd back to her.

Bidding is open at [info]livelongnmarry. I have bid and been outbid already.

Oh, Viacom is being a little bitch. I'm glad I mostly watch user created SPN vids over there. Take that, Viacom!

I thought I mentioned watching the Fringe pilot (New series from JJ Abrams, ie: the "Lost" guy) but I don't see the post, so maybe my LJ client ate it. Anyway, it was a pretty good pilot. I liked the lead woman. ([info]poisontaster I think you would like her too.) Hopefully she'll stay strong and smart. I'm not a fan of Joshua Jackson but he was tolerable here. It's got the conspiracy of the X-files mixed with the mystery of Lost, topped with some nifty special effects. (Also re: leaked pilots... *snickers* I almost wish they'd leaked Dollhouse instead. Two show that look like they've got massive budgets-- which one will get canceled first? And why didn't they keep New Amsterdam? That show was awesome.)

I may have bought myself an iPod for my birthday. Then had buyer's remorse immediately afterwards. Ah well, it was cheap refurbished and I can plug it into my car. Anyone got any suggestions for how I can prevent iTunes from putting its DRM all over my music? (I suppose I should go figure out just exactly what iTunes does, actually.)

Hmm, I've been pondering the definition of RPS AU fanfic recently. Isn't all RPS by its very existence AU? I mean these guys aren't in a romantic relationship with each other in real life. Is there a different meaning of AU that I'm not getting here? [info]loose_pages_sd is setting up a delicious for specifically those stories, but to me all RPS would fall under that umbrella. But it seems that I'm the only one who thinks that. And [info]janissa11 has a post discussing this genre, so what is the definition of RPS AU? With Sam/Dean slash, you can imagine that things take place off-screen but still in the universe, but for RPS you don't have that layer of fantasy because everything either happens or it doesn't. Am I being too literal?

Okay, I need to go feedback a couple of [info]spn_j2_bigbang stories and art, then figure out what I'm doing with my weekend. House cleaning is definitely on the agenda though. And pricing some air-conditioning. And reading-- I'm so behind on the things I want to read. Everyone have a happy Friday. :)

03:43 pm - Wow! I mean, WOW!!!!
I think I just had a joygasm. This is the coolest thing EVER! What a fantastic idea!!! A network of couches offered and used, staying in people's homes instead of hotels, low-budget and high-experience holiday trips. Just WOW!

What an incredibly attractive concept! *_*

I am definitely going to look at this thing carefully and consider putting my own couch up for offering. I just browsed the possibilities for Trondheim, and found three colleagues from work plus two others I know. Definitely going to corner them and Ask Excited Questions!

Couch Surfing - it's a bloody brilliant idea! :D

12:28 pm - Several things
I think I shall have to itemise this one:

1) Belated happy birthday to [info]karose, who rocketh like a rocking thing doind the coolest academic shit EVAH!

2) Happy birthday to [info]firescribble, who also rocketh and is hopefully not on fire from the excessive good weather we're having in Scandiwegia at present.

3) [info]livelongnmarry is a wonderful community where folks from all kinds of funky fandoms are offering up stuff, skills, favours and and STUFF for auction. The money goes to fund campaigns that aim to keep California's gender equal marriage law intact. Go check it out. Don't make Mr Sulu cry! [info]yuki_scorpio has two Rikkai plushies of your choice up for auction, and [info]crystalusagi is offering her services as a web designer + hosting.

4) And in another auction at that fabulous community, there is this work of squamous beauty. If I were richer, I'd bid, but I think I've spent my summer allowance for this year. >_>;

5) Tonight, there will be Tenimyu (St. Rudolph) & wine & snacks! WOOHOO!

6) And in closing:

Happy Constitution Independence Day to my American friends!

Why couldn't you guys do both at the same time and save us foreigners some confusion? XD;;;

Hail in July. Last weekend we hit 90, and I (having lost my East Coast immunity) was barely keeping up.

Today it's hailing. The sky is darker than it usually is at 6 am.
