With exquisite timing, on a bright -21C (windchill -30C) February morning, I find mvrdrk's double-felted mittens waiting in my postbox. They work, is all I need say. No need of double-bagging. And am of course terrified that I'll drop one somewhere, as I have twice dropped one of the grey mitts; but it's a colour that's likely to stand out against the wintry landscape if I do. Also I should be able to feel that a pocket lacks the proper bulk: double bagging leads to a belief that a mitten is present when all that reveals itself is the companion glove.

So thank you, mvrdrk. They are *very* much appreciated, especially in the arctic air set to return tomorrow night.

Very well indeed.

But winter being winter and prone to salt-slush, how do I wash them? Cold water Woolite on gentle cycle? or by hand?

Cold water on the gentle cycle. Not Woolite, which has been reformulated for cotton and nylon, not wool. Or by hand with regular shampoo, a quick rinse should take care of any salt. If you want them smaller, a hot wash on regular cycle will shrink them, but check every 10 minutes so they don't shrink too much. The red bleeds some, so beware of turning other things pink. They take a long time to dry, so I was putting them in a towel and stomping on them to get the water out.

(severely) They shouldn't be calling themselves Woolite if you can't use it on wool. Sheesh- is nothing sacred?

Regular shampoo it is; they'll smell of gardenias. (Can believe they take a long time to dry at that thickness.)
